Geylang Halt Warriors' Advance

A shaky start to this tie by Geylang United evolved into a credible performance by the Eagles as they managed a draw to close the gap at the top of the table to two points.
The visitors had been plagued with injuries in recent weeks, and had to rely on two Prime League players to fill the bench, while the Warriors had the luxury of a full squad, aside from the suspensions of Shaiful Esah and John Wilkinson.
The home side forced three corners in the opening two minutes, but it was Therdsak Chaiman's shot and free kick in the 5th and 6th minute which provided trouble, if any, to Amos Boon's goal.
But it was Geylang who struck first in the 17th minute as Miroslav Latiak found Noor Ali unmarked in the box and chipped the ball in from the left wing. The 33-year-old wasted no time and knocked the ball in above a stranded Shahril Jantan with his head.
Four minutes later, Noor Ali's outswinging corner put Miroslav Latiak through, but the Slovakian's driving shot missed the right post by centimetres.
Junior could have put the Eagles on a 2-0 lead towards the end of the first half as he found himself one-on-one with Shahril Jantan. The Brazilian attempted to thread the ball through underneath the keeper's arm, but his idea backfired and the ball drifted out for a corner.
The Warriors found their equaliser early in the second half, as birthday boy Aleksandar Duric took advantage of some shabby defending to head the ball past Amos Boon.
But Geylang took the lead once again in style, with Miroslav Latiak providing the assist once again, as he crossed to Rivaldo Costa, who was unhassled by the defence, and fired the ball into goal.
SAFFC could have equalised in the 67th minute when Therdsak Chaiman's free kick sliced through the wall, but slipped past the left post for a goal kick.
Two minutes later, former Eagles boy Ahmad Latiff attempted a bicycle kick in the six-yard-box, but like Chaiman's free kick, missed the post by inches, but this time through the right.
The addition of Ashrin Shariff in place of Norikazu Murakami proved to be a better option for the Warriors' attack as he hit a dangerous shot from Ahmad Latiff's free kick, which flew past the right of Amos Boon's goal.
Masrezwan Masturi managed to sting Shahril Jantan's palms with his shot, but Junior completely stuffed the rebound with a weak shot which bounced harmlessly off the boundaries of play.
Geylang's failure to convert their chances were punished as Aleksandar Duric broke away from the defence and chipped the ball over Amos Boon to equalise yet again for the home side.
The Warriors, however, showed that they were not done yet, but Amos Boon was the star for Geylang as he tipped away Therdsak Chaiman's free kick and prevented another Duric attempt. Ahmad Latiff managed to hit the net however, but the linesman caught him and his entire line of attack in an offside position.
Fazrul Nawaz replaced Junior in the 86th minute, but wasted what could have been a late winner for the Eagles as his poor attempt to receive a long pass from the right wing led to a goal kick.
Soon after, Hafiz Osman and Masrezwan Masturi engaged in a brawl which led to the former being given his marching orders, while Masrezwan was cautioned.
Frustration ensued for the Warriors as Mustaqim Manzur also saw red after showing his displeasure by elbowing Rivaldo Costa.
In the dying seconds, Hafiz Rahim was sent out to replace Rivaldo Costa, but the substitution was rendered void after referee Abas Daud also flashed a red at the Brazilian, while he was being stretchered off.
The substitution eventually took place, but it was Masrezwan Masturi who was replaced, just as the referee blew the whistle for full-time.
Failure to beat fifth-placed Geylang has took its toll on the defending champions, as they have a thin 52-point lead to take to their next fixture against 50-pointer Super Reds on 30 August, but whether the Warriors will lead through the Singapore Cup break will depend on tonight's clash between Tampines Rovers and Home United.

Title a bit misleading. People may thought that Geylang only trails SAFFC by 2 points.
