Geylang overcomes deficit to beat Sengkang
Geylang United came from behind to score two goals in the second half after a penalty converted by newcomer Reginaldo Estevao gave Sengkang Punggol a 1-0 lead at half time.
Sengkang started off brightly, with Razali Johari being the livewire in midfield and hardworking Estevao upfront, who earned his first S.League yellow card 10 minutes into the game.
The lion’s share of possession Sengkang had earned them chances at goal, which were, however, not converted, much to the dismay of Sengkang fans.
Razali's freekick at the 28th minute went wide after being intercepted by Hiroyuki Yamamoto’s header. Five minutes later, Estevao's shot also failed to hit the target.
Not giving up, Sengkang was finally rewarded at the 41st minute, when a corner taken by Razali resulting from a previous corner floated into the penalty box and Estevao was pushed by Rastislav Belicak in his attempt to connect to the long ball. Referee P Pandian, standing not far away, pointed to the spot straight away.
Estevao duly scored his first S.League goal by putting the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal, beating Geylang goalkeeper Amos Boon in the process.
The second half, however, was a different story, as Geylang looked the more promising side between the two teams.
Geylang made the impact almost immediately, when Masrezwan Masturi looped the ball over Hafez Mawasi to equalise for Geylang two minutes after the restart.
From then on, Geylang was the more active of both sides, forcing attempts after attempts, keeping the Sengkang defence and goalkeeper Hafez busy.
Geylang was again rewarded for their hard work, when Miroslav Latiak scored to put the Eagles ahead, reversing the tide of the game.
Seeing things not going their way, Sengkang’s caretaker coach Mirko Grabovac sent in another new signing, defender Toshiaki Kato, for his second S.League appearance at the 68th minute.
However, Sengkang failed to rekindle their performance in the first half, as Geylang had the better chances in the second half. In the process, Geylang midfielder Lau Meng Meng was shown a yellow card for apparently time wasting while taking a throw-in at the 71st minute, whereas Latiak, the scorer of the eventual winning goal, also saw yellow at the 84th minute.
The game eventually ended 2-1 in favour of Geylang United, denying Sengkang their third win of the season.
